Intelligent Number Plate - iNP
The Government is launching the NEW INTELLIGENT NUMBER PLATE (iNP) project on 01 November 2010, which will affect all the trucks, busses, trailers, caravans, motorcycles and other vehicles that require a number plate in the Gauteng Province that will be rolled out over the next 2-3 years.

As soon as the current BBB999*GP series is exhausted the iNP project will start or replace the old series with BB99BB*GP (consisting of two letters followed by two figures followed by two letters and the letters “GP” denoting the Gauteng Province) aluminium plates. The “new” BB00BB*GP intelligent number plate will be marked with a unique identification code, an authentication code and an expiry decal and the letters and numbers will remain dark blue with a white background.
The iNP will have its own validity period of five years from date of issue and the plate shall expire in the same month as the yearly license renewal.

Note: Motor dealers and blank manufacturers shall not be registered as Embossers and shall thus not emboss plates.

Personalised or special number plates
All vehicles with personalised or special number shall use the new intelligent plate format from 01 April 2011. Please refer to the Provincial Gazette Extraordinary Vol.16 Pretoria, 7 July 2010 No. 137 edition for detailed information regarding personalised plates, schedule 4, pages 20-29.

Plastic Number Plates
The Gauteng Government legislated on 2010-07-07 that the use of PLASTIC NUMBER PLATES will cease on 2010-08-06. This means that the only number plate that will be legal in the Gauteng Province from this date will be the new aluminium embossed number plates.
